Everything You Need to Know About Choosing the Right Yoga Teacher Training Program
Choosing a yoga teacher training program is no small thing. It's an investment—not only financially, but energetically, emotionally, and spiritually. Whether you’re enrolling to deepen your personal practice or step confidently into the role of teacher, the program you choose (and the teacher you choose to learn from) matters deeply.
Look for a Teacher Who Swims into the Deep End
Yoga is not just about learning to move your body in impressive ways—it’s about moving toward your most honest, awake self. You want to find a teacher who doesn’t just hang out in the shallow end of that pool. The best teachers swim further out into the depth of the practice—and they help you swim out there too.
That means choosing someone who isn’t just flexible in their body, but expansive in their study. A well-rounded teacher continues to deepen their understanding of Eastern philosophy, remains current with modern understandings of movement and trauma, understands the business of yoga, and is able to hold space with integrity and humility.
A truly exceptional teacher training experience is one that challenges you, supports you, and ultimately transforms you—and that starts with who is leading the room.
Should the Program Be Yoga Alliance Accredited?
Let’s get this out of the way: you do not need to be Yoga Alliance accredited to teach yoga. There are many highly respected programs and teachers who choose not to register with Yoga Alliance.
That said, a Yoga Alliance-accredited school must meet certain standards, and their lead trainers must have logged thousands of hours of teaching and training. Accreditation can be an indicator that a program is structured, comprehensive, and vetted. It’s not the only mark of a good school, but it can be a helpful benchmark—especially for newer students who don’t yet know what to look for.
Do Your Research (and Read the Reviews)
Start by checking the school's reviews. What do past students say? Look for patterns in the feedback. Are people saying they felt seen, supported, and challenged? Did they receive hands-on guidance? Were they encouraged to think deeply, reflect honestly, and integrate what they learned?
Also, pay attention to how the program presents itself: does it seem cookie-cutter or overly commercialized? Or does it feel like a thoughtful container created by real humans?
Pricing: What Should You Expect to Pay?
A fair price for a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) is typically between $2,800 and $4,000 (without room and board). For a 300-hour advanced training, expect $4,000 to $8,000+.
So what’s the deal with the $199 or $399 trainings you see online? Simply put: you get what you pay for. These programs often lack depth, real mentorship, and personal interaction. If your goal is to be a thoughtful, skilled teacher—not just get a certificate—you’re better off investing in a program that offers quality, connection, and support.
Class Size and Mentorship Matter
In my own 300-hour training, there were more than 60 people in the room. While the content was strong, I missed out on the one-on-one attention I craved. A smaller class size gives you access to real mentorship, personal feedback, and connection. Look for programs that intentionally cap their groups, and that offer ongoing support after training ends—whether through mentorship, alumni groups, or business coaching.
Ask Questions—Then Pay Attention to the Answers
Before you commit to a program, book a call or send a detailed email. Ask about the things that matter: who is teaching, what topics are covered, how much time is spent on practice vs. philosophy, what kind of support is offered, what the class size is like, and how they handle questions, trauma, or diverse student needs.
You can tell a lot about a school and a teacher by how they respond to your inquiry. Do they rush you off the phone? Do they give vague or generic answers? Or do they take the time to get to know you and answer your questions with presence and care?
The way someone teaches begins before you ever step foot into their training—it begins with how they connect with you as a potential student.
Final Thoughts
Choosing a yoga teacher training program is like choosing a path into your next chapter. It’s worth taking your time, asking the hard questions, and making sure you feel a genuine connection to the people guiding you. The best trainings don’t just certify you—they shape you, stretch you, and give you the tools to return to yourself more fully.
So go ahead: ask, explore, feel it out. And when you find the teacher who’s willing to keep swimming out into the deeper waters with you—that’s the one worth following.
